Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Directorate of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), Ministry of Defence, Israel have signed a Bilateral Innovation Agreement (BIA) to promote innovation and accelerated R&D in both countries’ startups and MSMEs for the development of dual-use technologies.

Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defence, R&D, and Chairman of DRDO, and Israel BG (Retd) Dr Daniel Gold, Head of DDR&D, signed the agreement on November 9, 2021 in New Delhi.

Under the terms of the agreement, both countries’ startups and industries will collaborate to develop next-generation technologies and products in fields like drones, robotics, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, photonics, biosensing, brain-machine interface, energy storage, wearable devices, natural language processing, and so on.

Both countries’ products and technologies will be customised to match their specific needs. The development activities will be funded jointly by the DRDO and Israel’s DDR&D. As a result, both countries will be able to use the technologies created under BIA for local purposes.

This isn’t the first time the two nations have opted to work together. India and Israel talked about doing cooperative research and development in the fields of big data and artificial intelligence last year.

Through cultural exchange programmes, academic relationships, and trade, previous collaborations with other countries have brought significant benefits. By focusing on areas where India excels and improving overall health and performance, India can now turn opportunities into advantages.
